Entra ID Backup & Recovery: 30-day point-in-time restore for Entra objects

Microsoft is adding extended 30-day backup and recovery for Entra objects, through the Microsoft 365 Backup app or the Microsoft 365 Backup Storage platform APIs. It allows a point-in-time restore of Entra objects to a last known good state, up to a rolling 30 days back.

Per the Roadmap item:

  • Advanced recovery features are in the Entra admin portal.
  • Some user recovery actions will be available in the Microsoft 365 Backup app in the Microsoft 365 admin center.
  • The existing 7-day recovery included with Entra ID P1 and P2 is already generally available and is independent of this item.

Organisations that want a longer recovery window for Entra objects than the built-in 7 days — for example, to recover from a bad bulk change or a malicious deletion noticed late.

  1. Note the difference between the built-in 7-day recovery (P1/P2) and this 30-day capability delivered through Microsoft 365 Backup.
  2. Check the licensing and billing model for Microsoft 365 Backup before planning to rely on it.
  3. Add “how would we restore Entra objects?” to your identity incident runbook, and test the 7-day recovery you already have.

General availability: December CY2026, as listed on the Microsoft 365 Roadmap (ID 567885).

Low. Nothing changes in your tenant automatically. This is an opportunity to improve recovery, not a required action.
